Competition cheerleaders win NGAC
The Gordon Lee Middle School competition cheerleading squad won first place at the inaugural North Georgia Athletic Conference Championships on Monday, October 20, beating Heritage, Ringgold, and LaFayette. The GLMS cheerleaders also finished first in the NGAC regular season, posting the highest combined score from all of the league competitions.
Star and Honor rolls announced
Ninety-six GLMS students earned inclusion on the Star Roll for the first nine weeks of the 2008-2009 school year. One hundred twelve students obtained Honor Roll status.
GLMS ranked fifth in state in writing
Gordon Lee Middle School had 90.8% of its students Meet and Exceed the standard on the 2008 Georgia Writing Assessment, the fifth highest percentage in the state. The Georgia state average for the "Meets and Exceeds" category is 77%.
GLMS also had the fifth fewest students in the "Did Not Meet" category, and Chickamauga City Schools was one of only six systems in the state with fewer than ten percent of students not meeting the standards.
Superintendent Melody Day was pleased with the results and said, "Writing is definitely a target area for us and a part of each school's school improvement plan. We have planned, evaluated, developed strategies, and committed to improve by writing across the curriculum—not just in English classes. We can all be proud that our efforts are yielding great results, but the best news is that our students are receiving focused instruction and achieving more than ever before."
